named winner of in the Technology category

Montréal, November 3, 2010 – Québec’s largest electronics assembly company, Varitron Technologies, is once more in the spotlight. Its President, Michel Farley, has just been named recipient of the Ernst & Young 2010 Entrepreneur Of The Year Award in the Technology category.

“I am proud to be in the company of the other winning entrepreneurs in this prestige competition,” Mr. Farley says. “To ensure we move forward and stand out in our highly competitive industry segment, I have always relied on a participative human resources management approach, and I consider employee recruiting and retention extremely important, along with implementing a corporate culture that properly fits our values as a company. Indeed, our investments in innovation and employee training have helped us stay ahead of the technology curve and successfully compete with China. These are the reasons why I am proud to share this award with my entire team. Every single day, they help Varitron Technologies consolidate its leadership position.”

François Dufresne, a partner at Ernst & Young and Québec Director of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards, notes: “It takes a true entrepreneur to face risks with confidence and to succeed amidst adversity. As the world economy recovers, the strategic vision and innovative spirit of local entrepreneurs are stimulating the Canadian market on the international scene. This year’s award winners, Michel Farley among them, have managed an impressive feat: that of achieving business success despite economic uncertainty. We congratulate and pay tribute to the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award winners for Québec, who continue to influence and inspire future generations of Canadian entrepreneurs.”

An entrepreneur with a passion
A seasoned businessman and a born entrepreneur, Michel Farley founded Varitron Technologies in 1991, seizing an opportunity to buy out the principal account held by a small family business in Montréal that was not growing and on its way to closing down. With fewer than half a dozen employees and minimal knowledge of electronics assembly, Mr. Farley picked up the ball and ran with it.

In a highly complex and competitive industry, Varitron Technologies stood apart immediately, thanks to superior production quality and strong client commitment. Mr. Farley very quickly made his presence felt within the company, making sure to be personally involved in all facets of production. Today, at age 47, he is at the helm of a company experiencing strong growth in spite of the cloud of uncertainty hanging over the global economy, as evidenced by that fact that Varitron’s sales have increased fivefold over the past five years. The company is currently active in the majority of leading-edge industry segments, including energy, transportation, industrial electronics, medicine, security, avionics, defence and telecommunications.

Varitron Technologies, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2011, now employs more than 220 people, making it Québec’s largest electronics assembly company, and the 113th largest SME in the province, according to Les Affaires newspaper.
